Want to Be a Product Manager? Here’s Your Compass

Image
If you're reading this, you've likely heard about the exciting, challenging, and rewarding world of Product Management . You're curious, ambitious, and you see a path for yourself building things people love . But the most common question I hear is: "How do I actually get started, especially if I don't have the official title?" The journey into product management isn't a straight line; it's about deliberately building a specific set of skills, experiences, and a powerful mindset. Here is a compass to guide you on that journey. 1. Master the Core Competencies (The "Learn" Phase) Before you can manage a product, you have to speak the language and understand the fundamentals. Your first step is to build a strong knowledge foundation. Learn the "Why": Start with the classics. Read books like " Inspired " by Marty Cagan to understand what makes great product teams tick and " The Lean Startup " by Eric Ries to...

Beyond the Backlog: Turning Strategy into a Coherent Plan

Image
In my last post, we talked about empathy . But what happens after you've listened to your customers? This is where many product teams fall into a trap: the endless backlog . A backlog is a useful tool, but it is not a strategy. Managing it can feel like you're simply feeding a machine, moving tickets from "To Do" to "Done." Anchor Everything to a "North Star" Objective: Before touching the backlog, define a clear, measurable outcome for the quarter or half. It’s not "ship the search feature." It's "Reduce the time it takes for users to find a product by 50%." Every feature must serve this objective. 2. Group Work into...

Listen with Empathy. Build to Empower

Image
Kicking off my new series on " Product Management as a Profession " with the absolute cornerstone of our craft: Empathy . Listen with Empathy. Build to Empower. Building & shipping products is at the core of my experience as a product manager but it was my hands-on role in product operations and strategy that elevated my approach—shifting my focus from the feature roadmap to the customer's entire journey . Mining customer feedback and gaining insights taught me the crucial importance of a simple two-step process that many of us miss: 1. Listen with deep empathy . It's not just about what users say. It's about understanding what they feel . What are their real, unmet needs ? What are the pain points they aren't even articulating? 2. Shift your goal from " making a product " to " empowering users ." Once we truly understand their challenges, our focus changes. Our goal isn't just to sell a solution but to equip users with th...

Product management is not just a role; It's a profession.

Image
I've been thinking a lot about what separates good product managers from great ones. The conclusion I keep coming back to is this:  Product management is not just a role; It's a profession. It's a commitment to a mindset , a discipline , and a craft . Over the next few weeks, I'll be sharing a series of posts exploring what this means in practice. We'll dive into the core pillars that define our profession. We'll kick it off tomorrow with the absolute foundation: Empathy . Stay tuned!
